Overview

Speakeasy Solutions Inc. provides below a basic lesson in the use of the Internet with Dragon. This tutorial page supplements in-depth web navigation training given by Speakeasy Solutions Inc. If you are not yet a client of Speakeasy Solutions Inc. and desire a guided and personal tutorial, please consider booking a training session.

Internet Explorer & Mozilla Firefox

Nuance claims the same commands and functionality work in both web browsers. This is simply not the case for all versions. However, updates to Dragon will hopefully alleviate this disparity.

In the meantime, if you use Firefox, try these techniques. If they do not work for you, use Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has its own set of challenges, discussed in our training sessions, but will like satisfy your needs (or modified to do so).

Basic Navigation on a Page

Say “page < up / down >” to press the equivalent keyboard keys.

Say “go to < top / bottom >” to navigate to the top and bottom of the page itself.

Clicking a Specific Text Link

Click a text link by saying one or more words within the text link. If you are using Version 11, the default settings require you to say “click” immediately before the text you wish to click. While preventing you from inadvertently clicking on a link while dictating, this setting can become very cumbersome and time-consuming for more savvy users; change the setting as desired.

If there is more than one match to the text you are clicking, each matching link will provide an associated green number — say the number of the desired link.

Say “list” or “list box section” to click on that link below. If enabled in the options, you may need to precede your command with the word “click”.

Say “section” (or “click section”) and then “three” or “choose three” to click on the Radio Button Section link.

Then say “go back” to return to the previous position or web page. “go forward” selects the next web page in your browser’s history.

List Box Section | Check Box Section | Radio Button Section | Text Field Section

Say "drop list" to drop the list down into view. Say "press L" or "move down four" to choose Legal. Say "tab" to close the list.

Overview

There are several items you need to consider if your organization plans to deploy Dragon in a Citrix environment.

These documents provide some basic guidelines about configuring the Citrix environment and scaling client usage on Citrix servers to ensure maximum performance of Dragon and users of Dragon, as well as other implementation and usage information.

This information is restricted to Client Access only, access level: Presales & Solution Setup Info.

Ensure that you are logged in to view or register if needed.

Overview

In preparation of implementing the speech recognition solution, Speakeasy Solutions asks you to address the following at least 48 hours prior to installation of the Dragon software. If you have IT/IS, please send this information to them.

PC Specifications

Please confirm with Speakeasy Solutions the PCs specifications (processor, RAM, and OS).

Minimum PC Specs

Speakeasy Solutions recommends the following absolute minimum PC hardware requirements for Dragon:

For a Windows XP OS, Intel core, 2.4 GHz and 2 GB RAM.

For a Windows 7 OS, Intel Quad core, i5, 4 GB 1333 Mhz RAM, 7200 RMP drive, 64-bit OS install.

Antivirus

If antivirus is required, we recommend: the Home versions of NOD32 Antivirus, plus Smart Security if there is no firewall in place.

Increase Processor

If several demanding applications will be used simultaneously, increase the processor and RAM for improved performance. Read more about this in our blog.

PC Resident Software Programs

Application Compatibility

If you have concerns regarding compatibility, please confirm with Speakeasy Solutions the programs that you wish to use with Dragon as well as your resident antivirus software (some antivirus decrease the speed of computers).

MS Word Templates

If you intend to use MS Word letterhead templates with Dragon Medical, please have these created and accessible for the first training session. Read more about this on our website.

Latest Patches & Software Availability

Applications & OS

It is always prudent to ensure that your PC’s computer programs and operating system have the latest patches and service packs installed.

MS Office

If you intend to use MS Office (or any component thereof) with Dragon, install (with updates and patches applied) the complete (not a trial version) application on the PC(s) before the Dragon installation appointment. Otherwise, Dragon will need to be reinstalled.

Passwords, Administrative Privileges, & Antivirus

Admin Access

Please make available for Speakeasy Solutions any Windows passwords, and logon information. Speakeasy Solutions will also require Administrative Privileges on your computer for installation (check with your IS/IT).

Antivirus

Any resident antivirus software must be configured to exclude several directories after the installation of Dragon (NOTE: most free antivirus software do not allow for these exclusions). Please ensure that Speakeasy Solutions is able to perform this task (you may need to obtain passwords for your antivirus application from your IT).

PC Requirements (USB, Defragmentation & Network Setup for Roaming)

USB Ports

This speech recognition solution will require the use of one of your PC’s USB ports (two USB ports if you are using Dragon AND a digital voice recorder). Please ensure this is available for the installation of Dragon.

Defrag

Please have your PC system defragmented prior to the installation of Dragon (even if you have a brand new computer or installation – hard drives immediately fragment the moment any software is installed, including the OS). If you do not have someone who can perform this task for you, or you do not wish to do this yourself, Speakeasy Solutions can perform this service for you at the time of installation although this will increase installation time by at least one additional hour. Read more about this in our blog.

Network of PCs

If your solution will be installed across multiple computers, taking advantage of Dragon’s Roaming User Profile feature, all same-location computers on which Dragon will be installed need to be networked. Moreover, all computers must be able to completely read/write to a directory which will ultimately contain the roaming user profiles (this does not need to be on a server, but must be visible to all computers). Please have this shared network directory prepared for the installation and its location known by the point of contact for the installation (i.e. yourself, IT personnel, end user etc.).

Document Availability

For the third training session, please have accessible a quantity (approximately 50 — however, the more the better) of electronic documents created by yourself in your writing style. These documents may reside on your local computer, a network, memory stick etc.

These documents should be a sampling of the type of work you will be accomplishing with speech recognition (reports, letters etc.). Formatting of these documents is irrelevant, as they will not be physically read into Dragon, but will actually be used by Dragon to learn your writing style by way of a feature called Add Words from Documents.

These documents should be in rich text, plain text, MS Word, or HTML format. If the documents are in Microsoft Word format, please ensure that MS Word is installed on the computer. If, however, these documents are from a database or another format, please have them converted to text (i.e. .txt, .rtf, or .doc(x) if MS Word is present).

Remote Installation & Training

If Speakeasy Solutions is performing installation and training remotely, the first item that Speakeasy Solutions will install is a remote desktop viewing application enabling Speakeasy Solutions to view your computer. It is absolutely imperative that you have a reliable, wired, high speed internet connection. You will be connected to the Internet for the duration of your appointments with Speakeasy Solutions. Connectivity issues will prolong appointments and increase costs.

For your comfort, we strongly advise that you also have a speaker phone.

Furthermore, if you are behind a firewall or company network, contact your IS/IT support staff and ask them to make any preparations necessary for the installation and use of a remote desktop viewing application. Feel free to speak with Dean Husby if you have any questions or concerns.

Overview

These guidelines explain how to make a Windows® application and HTML environment compatible with Dragon NaturallySpeaking and Dragon Medical. The guidelines are intended for all Windows and HTML application developers. The primary goal of these guidelines is to allow applications to work with Dragon NaturallySpeaking (Dragon) “out of the box,” that is, without the necessity of using the Dragon SDK to integrate speech into the application. However, following them will also make applications more compatible with other speech applications and accessibility tools.
