Value added vocabularies, enhancing your use of Dragon.

Access levels: À la carte or Complete Solution

Overview

For Speakeasy Solutions clients who have received a complete speech recognition solution package, below are our value added Vocabularies to be imported into Dragon as appropriate.

Importing the desired vocabularies quickly enhances your accuracy, precluding the need for you to spend time on tweaking your own vocabulary.

The Vocabularies

SeS Canadian General (non medical) — Canadian spelled words

Importing A Vocabulary

You may wish to export your vocabulary for use by another user profile of your own. Do not share vocabularies between different individuals. While you may wish to share custom word lists, do not share vocabularies unless all persons write in the same writing style (which is quite rare).

A Dragon vocabulary topic consists of six files. However, when you import, Dragon will seemingly only detect one.

Say, “manage vocabularies”, to open this dialog box. Click the Import button and retrieve the desired vocabulary files from a specific location. When you import a vocabulary, you see only one file (with a .Top extension). This is the vocabulary file you import. Be cautious about overwriting an existing vocabulary of the same name (unless you wish to do so).

If you wish to retain your existing vocabulary and merely import one with the same name, rename the newly imported vocabulary.

You cannot merge vocabularies.

Benefits and methodology for utilizing additional vocabularies.

Access levels: À la carte or Complete Solution

Overview

Outlined below are the benefits and methods for managing additional vocabularies, thereby increasing recognition accuracy.

Why Use This Feature

Using a highly tuned vocabulary provides you with the highest possible recognition accuracy. If you use one vocabulary for your main writing needs, but your writing style varies dramatically depending on content (i.e. medical reports and general email correspondence), consider creating additional vocabularies for each writing style.

Creating additional vocabularies is highly recommended in the following circumstances:

You need to be able to dictate for the purposes of coding (.HTML, C++, and so on),

You write in several different styles (i.e. radiology reports and a travel journal for your holiday), or

You are creating documents for more than one person where each of them has an extremely distinctive writing style and vocabulary use.

How to Open Your Desired Vocabulary

You will use the same user profile with any additional vocabularies you create. In other words, one profile can hold numerous vocabularies, each one attuned to a specific vocabulary and writing style.

Upon opening your Dragon profile where you have more than one vocabulary, you are prompted for which vocabulary you would like to use. Switch to any of the other vocabularies in your user profile at any time during your speech dictation session by issuing the “manage vocabularies” command or clicking Vocabulary> Manage Vocabularies or clicking Vocabulary> Open Recent Vocabulary.

Always use the appropriate vocabulary for maximum recognition accuracy.

Creating Additional Vocabularies

Create additional vocabularies by saying “manage vocabularies” or clicking on Vocabulary> Manage Vocabularies. Click on the New button and give the new vocabulary a name.

This new vocabulary can be based on:

Dragon’s general vocabulary (medium or large in size),

One of the specialized vocabularies installed with the version of Dragon you are using (i.e. medical, or legal),

An empty dictation, or

One of your existing vocabularies.

The size of the vocabulary chosen automatically by Dragon when you initially created your user profile relates to how much RAM your computer has at the time of creation. Therefore, if you are creating a new vocabulary, you may wish to bear in mind that a larger vocabulary would require more of your computer’s RAM.

Empty Dictation is useful if you wish to create a completely customized vocabulary. Please discuss any of your special vocabulary needs with Speakeasy Solutions, and they will be able to guide the process for you effectively.

Improving Your New Vocabulary’s Performance

Once you have created the new vocabulary, populate this new vocabulary with your particular vocabulary and writing style. Run the add words from documents feature within the newly created vocabulary. Remember to perform this with applicable documents (i.e. documents written for the chosen vocabulary in that specific writing style).

Customize the vocabulary further within the vocabulary editor. You may wish to export your custom word list from your other vocabularies and import words you will use in your new vocabulary (edit the list in a basic text editor prior to importing in your new vocabulary).

Vocabulary Optimizer

When Dragon asks, do not run the vocabulary optimizer feature, as this method of improving your writing style is ineffective and can hamper your user profile’s efficiency. Uncheck the Email and Documents boxes and click Cancel. Your new vocabulary will still be created.

Export & Import Your Vocabulary

You may wish to export your vocabulary for use by another user profile of your own. Do not share vocabularies between different individuals. While you may wish to share custom word lists, do not share vocabularies unless all persons write in the same writing style (which is quite rare).

When you export your vocabulary, Dragon creates a vocabulary topic consisting of six files. Create a folder for these files on your hard drive or network.

Say, “manage vocabularies”, to open this dialog box. Select the vocabulary, click the Export button and guide the vocabulary files to the appropriate folder. Similarly, activate the Import button to retrieve the desired vocabulary files from a specific location.

Once you have imported a vocabulary into a user profile, delete the exported vocabulary from your hard drive or server location.

Additional Vocabulary Summary

Create new vocabulary

Do not run the Vocabulary Optimizer

Add words from documents to adapt to your writing style

Customize your vocabulary further in the Vocabulary Editor

Overview

For Speakeasy Solutions clients who have received a complete speech recognition solution package, below are our value added Custom Word Lists to be imported into Dragon as appropriate.

These word lists are separated into three categories: general, medical and legal. There is also some crossover between these categories depending on your needs.

Importing the desired word lists preemptively adds words and phrases you might otherwise need to spend time adding yourself, quickly refining your user profile.

Importing a Word List

When importing a list of words, choose the appropriate options on the Add Words from Word Lists dialog box. If the list is from a trusted source and you know you wish to add the list in its entirety, there is no need to check any options. If, however, you wish to preview the list, check Preview the list of unknown words.

How to import, export and create a custom word list in Dragon.

Access levels: À la carte or Complete Solution

Overview

Outlined below is the method for importing custom word lists. This method is particularly useful when importing Speakeasy Solutions’ value added word lists (i.e. BC medical facilities, legal acts etc.).

Anatomy of A Word List

Within your current vocabulary, import or export a list of words to refine your vocabulary. If you have a list of custom words that you would like to share with another user, export your custom words only (this does not include Dragon vocabulary items with modified properties).

The exported list is in .txt format, and editable with any basic text editor. Each word or phrase is on a separate line, and where relevant contains a spoken form. Do not combine individual entries on the same line as Dragon adds entire lines as one vocabulary item. A phrase separated by a “\” indicates that the phrase has a written form (the portion on the left side of the \) and a spoken form (the portion on the right side of the \).

Vocabulary word lists that are imported are added directly to a user’s vocabulary.

Export a Word List

Export your vocabulary through Dragon’s Vocabulary menu (Vocabulary> Export custom word and phrase list) or say, “export words”. Import your vocabulary through Dragon’s Vocabulary menu (Vocabulary> Import list of words or phrases) or say, “import words”.

Add a list of words to your vocabulary at any time. This is a good feature to use within an organization sharing the same organization-specific vocabulary. Adhere to the following parameters:

A new word or phrase must appear on each line. In other words, do not place the list of words all on one line or several lines — each word or unified phrase should be on its own line.

Spoken forms are added on the same line, after the Written form, and separated by a “\\” mark.

The document must be in .txt format.

Click Next.

Guide Dragon to the .txt file containing the list of words you wish to add. Click Next.

You can add or remove any .txt files you wish. Lists of words contain a phrase entry on each line. This is not where you add documents for analysis.

Once you have added all the word lists you wish, click Next.

If you check the preview box, then you have an opportunity to review the list at this time.

You will also be given an opportunity to train the words, but unless you have a heavy accent or speech challenges, this step is unnecessary. Afterwards, Dragon offers a summary.

Click Finish.

How to edit & duplicate Dragon's individual commands.

Access levels: À la carte or Complete Solution

Overview

Outlined below are the methods for editing & duplicating individual Dragon commands. These methods are particularly useful when creating new commands based on Speakeasy Solutions’ sample commands or your own commands.

Editing a Command

Find your command by opening the command browser (say “{open | launch} command browser”), clicking on the Script button, modifying the Grammar as needed and selecting the command.

Double click the command, or select the command and click on the Edit button to edit that particular command. The MyCommands Editor dialog box appears and you can edit any portion of the command as necessary. When you are finished, say “save” to save the command.

Create a New Copy of a Command

Create a new command based on an existing command in order to save time when you need to create a new command that is extremely similar to an existing command. Select the command from the Script menu and click New Copy. Alternatively, open the command and click Create New. This provides you with a new copy for editing. Dragon changes the name so you do not overwrite the original command — you will want to change this name to something suitable.

Access level: Complete Solution

Overview

For Speakeasy Solutions clients who have received a complete speech recognition solution package, below are our value added Sample Commands to be imported into Dragon.

The sample commands are based on over 11 years of working with clients in the medical and legal fields, learning what custom commands they desire the most. While custom commands are often created “on the spot” during training, Speakeasy Solutions has prepared a series of frequently requested commands to be used as a basis for each user.

These sample commands feature tasks performed in MS Word, MS Outlook, EMRs, general computer use and more.

The Commands

SeS Samples (for version Dragon 11.x)

Download the above zip file, which contains the .dat command file.

Unzip the zip file and import the commands into your Dragon user profile.

Open the command browser by saying “{open | launch} command browser”. Activate the Manage menu item. Click on the Import button and guide the file browser to the file location containing the commands you wish to import.

This displays custom commands organized by group (this is why it is always prudent to assign a group to each command you create — commands are much easier to find for importing and exporting purposes). Click on a group’s folder to view its list of commands. Select specific commands within a group or an entire group by clicking in the pertinent box(es). Select commands from as many groups as you wish. You will be warned if you attempt to import a command that already exists.

Finally, click the Import button to finish the process. These commands are now usable and are just like any other custom command in the command browser (i.e. you can delete, edit, view, train, and copy the commands).
